Day Fifteen-Traveling Home

28 07 2011

Our day began at 4:30 am. We were packed and out of the room by 5:30. Our wonderful guide Aron had arranged for us to have a “to go” breakfast from the White Swan. We drove to the airport and ate lightly on our breakfast. I think we were all a little anxious about the long day of travel ahead. We checked in to the Guangzhou Airport and got through security without any problems. Our first flight left on time and was uneventful. We arrived at the Beijing Airport and gathered our suitcases. Then we needed to recheck all our bags. It was a true miracle that we did not have any luggage issues on this leg of our flight. All five suitcases were the current weight! Praise the Lord! We then began a four-hour lay-ever! UUHHGGG! We got some lunch at McDonald’s. (side note: I may never visit another McD’s…very tired of it!)

Our next flight boarded on time. We began the long 12 hour flight about 4:15pm. This flight was packed! There was not a single seat empty as far as I could tell. Our Melody did great! She stayed awake until about 7:00 and then continued to sleep until the last hour of the flight! It was amazing. Grace and Colt slept for about six or seven hour too! Dad and I each got at least two hours. The flight home was much easier on us than the flight over. We were so very thankful!

We arrived in Chicago at 4:15pm (it was 4:15 am on Friday morning in China) on Thursday! As were started for the Immigration Line and Customs, they informed us that 10 planes has landed with at least 300 passengers each in the past hour! Oh my…the lines looked insurmountable! We tried to remain positive. The line actually only took us a total of an hour and 45 minutes. It was not too bad! After customs we made sure to take pictures of our girl putting her feet on US ground! She was officially an US citizen at that moment! We all were thrilled for her and this big moment that will change everything for her! Grace quietly began to sing…”I am proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free!” It was very funny and we all had a good laugh.

Our final flight was set to board about 9:15 pm and after three gate changes in two different terminals, we boarded the final plane! It was a great feeling. Our long-awaited trip was coming to an end but the journey together as a family was just about to begin!

Philippians 4:4

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
